History of Nerf Guns: Who Invented the First Nerf Gun
The word Nerf basically has no full form and it was just a line of products that fell into place. Reyn Guyer was an American inventor who came up with foam balls in the late 1960’s. He invented the first foam ball and in 1969, the first Nerf Ball was introduced. The Nerf Ball turned out to be a success because it was a toy that children could play with that was safe to use. Right after this, he invented the Nerf Gun about 20 years later. The Blast-a-Ball was released which is basically a Nerf Blaster. This single fire ball blaster gun was sold as a double pack and shot 1 ball every 2 seconds.
Right after this, the Nerf Blast-a-Matic was released which released several balls before reloading. These two models were very successful and were found in almost every retail store from 1989-1993.
The commercial that was released for the two guns took the world by storm
The Nerf Gun commercial was both entertaining and cheesy. After the commercial, people flocked to the markets to have Nerf Wars.
The newer releases
The Nerf Sharpshooter was the first Nerf gun that used darts instead of foam balls. It was released in 1922 and was a part of the Nerf Original Series. Later on these darts evolved into Mega darts. This model still used darts that had fins.
In 1993, the famous Arrowstorm was introduced that was one of the biggest blasters every created. It required two handles to hold the blaster up which held 6 arrows that automatically rotated after each shot. After constant modifications made by Nerf to increase the performance and accuracy of the darts, the Nerf Sharpshooter II was released in 1995. This model gained popularity very fast because of how easy it was to modify using Nerf accessories.
After many creations and discontinuations, the Power Nerf and Air Tech series were released which shot micro darts as far as 78 feet. Some models even included a liquid gauge at the side of the blaster to show just how much air pressure was left in the blaster.
Darts started gaining popularity and foam ball guns were almost going extinct
Almost every model that was released after the Nerf Sharpshooter included darts. Every Nerf Blaster used darts until the 2015 Rival Series. Foam balls made a comeback with high impact rounds but they still aren’t half as popular as the guns that shoot darts. After a while Nerf also tried to introduce Nerf Guns with laser tag.
